From 1 January 2006, Workplace Health & Safety Queensland adopted the National Code of Practice for the Management and Control of Asbestos in Workplaces for the identification, reporting and management of asbestos at commercial buildings built before 1 January 1990 - the "Code".

All commercial buildings were required to have asbestos identified and correct control measures implemented within the workplace by 1 JANUARY 2008. This deadline has passed and it is imperative that commercial building owners/managers obtain the necessary asbestos report and register and ensure their compliance with the regulations and codes of practice.

The requirements of the Code are:

  • the use of terms previously defined as 'asbestos materials' and 'asbestos products' being replaced with 'asbestos-containing materials'. Previously, most building owners would have had an audit of asbestos materials only but now must include asbestos products i.e. cement sheeting, corrugated roof sheeting, etc.
  • to conduct audits and keep a register listing the existence of ACM at the workplace
  • to display signage stating the presence of all ACM
  • the development, implementation and maintenance of an Asbestos Management Plan
  • Air monitoring compulsory during removal, demolition or renovation works
  • Final Clearance Certificates be obtained following removal works
  • Register of ACM be reviewed every 12 months if asbestos remains at the workplace
