Asbestos Audits

The primary legislative requirement under the Workplace Health & Safety Regulations and Code of Practice NOHSC:2018(2005) is the preparation of an asbestos report which includes the inspection and sampling of asbestos containing materials (ACM) and the provision of an ACM Register documenting the location, health risks, condition and recommended control measures of all identified ACM.

The inspection of asbestos is first undertaken by an evaluation and risk assessment of asbestos containing materials (ACM).

Suspected ACM are sampled by visual inspection and sent to an accredited NATA registered laboratory to determine the existence of asbestos fibres.

Location, type, health risks, condition and recommended control measures of ACM's are then relayed into the appropriate ACM Register and report is prepared.

Following the necessity of obtaining an ACM Audit is the requirement of:

  • signage installation identifying the location of asbestos
  • the implementation of an Asbestos Management Plan

Signage

It is important that any asbestos discovered at the workplace be identified by way of appropriate asbestos signage.

It is required under section 8 of the asbestos Code of Practice that any areas of a workplace which contain ACM, including plant, equipment and components, should be signposted with warning signs to ensure that the asbestos is not unknowingly disturbed without the correct precautions being taken.

This can be accomplished by engaging ABSCAN to supply and install the appropriate signs and labels. This is normally carried out following our audit of the subject property.

Examples of signage is shown to the right.

Asbestos Management Plan

What is Required?

An Asbestos Management Plan is one of the main requirements of the asbestos legislation, namely section 8 of the Code of Practice for the Management and Control of Asbestos in Workplaces. It is stated that an Asbestos Management Plan (AMP) must be developed and implemented at the workplace and must be read in conjunction with the Asbestos Register (ACM Audit).

The purpose of an AMP is to help persons with control of premises to comply with the asbestos prohibition and prevent exposure to airborne asbestos fibres while ACM remain in the workplace.

The following principles must be applied and are addressed in ABSCAN's AMP:

  • A workplace register of ACM
  • Details of any maintenance or service work on that ACM, including dates when the work was performed, scope of the works, the company that performed the works and any clearance certificates
  • Mechanisms for providing all relevant people with information about ACM
  • Decisions about management options to maintain or replace ACM
  • A timetable for action for reviewing the risk assessment in specific circumstances of the workplace
  • Monitoring arrangements
  • Responsibilities of all persons involved with the asbestos management plan
  • Training arrangements for workers and contractors
  • A procedure for reviewing and updating the management plan and register of ACM
  • Safe work methods
  • Annual review of ACM information
